As Heartland, the state’s human inhabitants tend to populate the largest major cities and thriving areas of commerce found in Wichita, Kansas City, Overland Park, Topeka, Olathe and Lawrence.
With a population of more than three million, residents enjoy strong employment, a low cost of living,
quality schools and affordable real estate. There are plenty of houses for sale and the average cost of a single-family home with 2,200 square feet, four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and a 2-car garage is between $136,618 and $163,273. And the real estate market is as diverse as the terrain and climate of the country’s 14th largest state with everything from ranch properties and custom estates to modern tract homes and turn-of-the-century Victorians.
The state of Kansas was named "Konza, or people of the south wind," by the Sioux Indians long before Spanish and French adventurers traveled through the state looking for gold and lost cities. Several countries claimed portions of the land until 1803 when it was purchased by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. During the Civil War, the lands were torn as clashes between pro- and anti-slavery forces earned the state the nickname "Bleeding Kansas." The area became the country's 34th state in 1861 with Topeka as its capital.
The geographical “Heart of America” is a scenic panorama of undulating, virtually treeless prairie stretching for several million acres throughout east and south-central
area. This endless terrain of buttes and mesas includes the Flint Hills, one of the largest remaining segments of true tall-grass prairie left in the United States and home to almost a million head of cattle that graze on its big bluestem grasses. Buffalo still roam in special game preserves located throughout the state. Other animals including deer, antelope, beaver, bobcat and prairie dogs are also native to the state.
